At 8:00 a.m. this morning, everything had been just peachy. Emma hadn't had any worries, any doubts, any reason to fear for the life of her companion at all. In fact, for the first time in a while, she had been letting her guard down.[break][break]

That, of course, was her first mistake.[break][break]

Scolipede, one of her newer additions to the team, but none-the-less a well-respected and appreciated member, had invested herself in getting some sun that peaked between the leaves of the trees in Petalburg forest. Little did either of them know that the watering hole they had recently visited was contaminated.[break][break]

Emma, not knowing anything about the history of the 'plague' as the townspeople called it, would be left all alone in the middle of the woods with a severely ill and rapidly weakening Scolipede.[break][break]

Was she sick due to drinking from the same lake? Absolutely not, because she hadn't had a drink from the late - she was resourceful and brought her own bottled water.[break][break]

Due to Scolipede's sudden illness, returning her to her pokeball wasn't in her list of options, and as such, Emma found herself pacing around in town, asking for help.[break][break]

Emma Wolfe, asking for help? Yes, that's definitely odd.[break][break]

elijah knows who she is. a superior elevated to a height reserved only for the most fiendish or voracious in battle. the gardener averts his eyes from such pillars; instead, he prefers to till the soil around them and grow ever-reaching vines.

quietly, he walks over to her. a knowing glance is hopefully enough to finalize their common connection. rocket to rocket, elijah mutters, "can't take care of your own pokemon?"

he knows he's playing with poison. yet, the apothecary can't help but have fun with the shift in power.

"i have a place here." elijah says and gestures for her to follow. "no thanks to you, maybe your scolipede won't die."

he leads her to a nearby hotel— it's shoddy, but satisfactory. elijah opens the door to his first floor room. a sprawl of vines and plants overwhelming the furniture greet them as elijah spreads a cloth on a couch.

Elijah's low voice ignites the slow burn of Emma's fury.[break][break]

"Can't take care of your own pokemon?"[break][break]

She stops short, turns to face him just as he gestures for her to follow. She knows she has no choice, that if she doesn't follow him her Scolipede is sure to die. But that doesn't mean she's happy.[break][break]

There's a small part of her that blames Team Rocket for the sickness running rampant in Petalburg. It's probably just a happy coincidence that Rocket's arrival in Hoenn has coincided with the plague... but the fact remains.[break][break]

"Watch yourself, Gardner."[break][break]

The name she speaks may have once made her twinge, but it has no effect on her anymore. She's left behind the Gardner name.[break][break]

Emma takes in the appearance of Elijah's shoddy, run-down hotel. She looks unimpressed but she is also unwilling to abandon the only aid she's been given. His room is covered in plants and smells earthy. She sighs as she gently coaxes her sick Scolipede to enter the room. She's lethargic and breathing heavily, but is otherwise alive.[break][break]

"You'd best pray she doesn't die."[break][break]

she bites back. expected, but still a toxin. a shock to the system.

"oh, i'm watching myself." elijah says, coasting nervously underneath a layer of cool ice. "watching myself save your pokemon."

the hotel room is a mess. it's obvious this is not allowed. yet, elijah had swooped in like it was his own original domain.

"and if she does die?"

elijah prods for an answer as he meanders to a nearby drawer enclosed in vines. as he opens it, the vines shift away and draw back to a victreebel that had been brooding in the corner of the room. inside, the drawer contains a mortar and pestle and a neatly organized assortment of herbs.

he fishes the mortar and pestle from the drawer. quickly, he fills the stone bowl with several seeds and leaves and passes it to emma.

handing her the pestle, elijah says, "start grinding." sighing, he inspects the scolipede. "i wonder if our invasion did something to the water supply..." as his words trail off, elijah does as well, moving to various plants in the room to pluck a medicinal harvest.

She says nothing, mostly because he's right. But also because she fears that if she distracts him, Scolipede may be in even greater danger.[break][break]

However, his question strikes a nerve in her, and she feels as though he's threatening her. Her rank above him does not really grant her much more power, but it still irritates her that grunts speak to her with disrespect. [break][break]

But perhaps that's to be expected when you work for lowlife, petty criminals like Team Rocket.[break][break]

She's thinking about this now as Elijah hands her a mortar and pestle. The stone is cool in her hands, and she grips the tools intensely. She does as asked, concentrating on turning the seeds and herbs into dust.[break][break]

"If she dies, you'll have to replace her."[break][break]

Elijah continues to speak, this time drawing attention to the thoughts she had previously been considering. Her eyes narrow suspiciously, for a moment curious as to if he's a mindreader.[break][break]

"I wouldn't be surprised. We aren't very considerate and eco-friendly when it comes to conquering the world."[break][break]

"was kanto the same?" elijah turns on a kettle; it's mostly glass, transparent with a wooden aesthetic to its lid and base. "if we keep this up, Hoenn's going to kill us before the league can."

he peers back, seeing the beast dutifully grinding the earthly components together. his breath leaves his lips. it's a sight to see. although some may gawk at the beast's obedience to a simple grunt, elijah's brief pause reflects a kinder heart. seeing his work be practiced so willingly by another makes him almost smile.

from his pockets, he shuffles out a tea bag. "shake what you've made into here." he opens the cross-hatched pouch. "mm. sorry about the mean-spirited remarks earlier. sometimes it's the only way i know how to communicate."

She says this without looking up from her work. It hasn't even occurred to her that she's obeying the orders of a grunt. Her only purpose, his only purpose to her, is to bring Scolipede back from its illness. That's all that matters right now.[break][break]

When the herbs and seeds are crushed, a satisfying pile of dust in the bottom of the bowl, she stands back up. Elijah has offered her a tea bag, and she takes it and does as she's told, pouring her work into it.[break][break]

The woman glances up at Elijah as he talks his way through a half-apology. For the most part, she's indifferent. The attitude problems of grunts are beneath her. For the most part, she doesn't even interact with them.[break][break]

"Probably for the best. It'll keep you alive longer."[break][break]

"interesting to see a beast so critical of rocket."

elijah ties the tea bag up and twists the leftover material into a neat curl. a string chokes it tight, threateningly close to tearing the fragile mesh.

"what if the higher-higher-ups hear you?"

the kettle hisses. water bubbles up against the glass walls like wailing faces, wanting escape. elijah pulls the hefty jug from the base and reaches over the counter for a cup waiting on the window sill. a snaking vine lifts the cup for him and places it closer to the kettle.

"thanks, llere." the victreebel's vine withdraws with a slither.

elijah pours, the steaming stream pooling into a dramatic flush of crystalline pink. the colour unfurls like a flamenco dress. he grabs the handle of a jammed drawer, grunting as he forces it open before drawing a pipette from its tired space.

"mm, is that a promise?" elijah siphons the concoction with the tool before carefully bringing it over to her scolipede. "several drops in, and everything should be back to normal in a day's time."

elijah sighs.

"we don't deserve these pokemon."

It's a blunt question. She has nothing to fear.[break][break]

"I suppose then they'll have to kill me."[break][break]

Her attention changes to the kettle, and she immediately stands up. Emma isn't normally the type to grow attachments to her Pokemon, but having them needlessly die when she's in the position to stop it doesn't sit well with her.[break][break]

So when the kettle hisses and bubbles, announcing that it's ready, so is she.[break][break]

"No, just a suggestion. It's up to you whether you're smart enough to take it."[break][break]

Emma follows his direction or watches as he performs. Either way, she is rapt at attention as Scolipede is tended to. It seems to immediately ease some of his tensity and sickness. The giant armored beast is resting more peacefully in the couch, falling into a deep sleep.[break][break]

She looks up as he sighs and says something she wasn't expecting.[break][break]

"Don't let the higher-higher-ups hear you say that. They could give a damn about Pokemon."[break][break]

To be fair, neither does she. They've simply started to grow on her as companions.[break][break]

elijah is. critical of their methods. critical of their baseless sense of morality— and yet he is equally as guilty. swallowed up by their alluring call to change. his victreebel shifts places, its overgrowth crawling like an organ mass to another vacant spot in the overcrowded room.

"no. i don't question our methods." elijah says. after the kettle's banshee call, he hears his sarcastic toxin pull up from his veins once more. "oh, i'm smart enough. and smart enough to save your pokemon.

he basks in the scent of the healing tea.

"when their pokemon become sick, we'll see how much of a damn they give." elijah whispers. "especially when i'm the cure dangling in front of them."

and the medicine drops on the scolipede's tongue.
